Fish Dies After Major Cleanup?

So, due to a disaster listed in another thread, I've done a lot of cleanup on my tank, to include removing rocks and brushing off loads of algae.

That was the last time I saw my captive bred Rainsford goby (doing fine otherwise for several months), hiding under one of the rocks I removed and replaced. It seemed to be eating fine that day.

But, I've not seen it for a week, and am chalking it up as a casualty. (if it died in the tank, I think the CUC got it; if it jumped out the cats got it within 30 seconds)

Anyone ever do a major cleanup of their tank and have fish disappear?

One time:
Moved around the live rock and crushed a Royal Gramma in the process... :(

:eek: I thought a fish would be able to escape/etc, especialy if it was hiding under a rock before. Well, I didn't intentionally crush it, but who knows where it might have hid or gone off to. :mad::mad::(:(:(:(

A Royal Gramma will go into a live rock to take safety. I should have looked to see which rock that he went in.

Actually a lot of fish will try to hide in the rock you are moving around.

Gotta keep a running count of the fish while you are working. [emoji53]

Yup, I think that is exactly what led to the demise of my first diamond watchman goby. Didn't kill it directly but I do think it got injured and slowly starved to death.

This happened again; I got a second one about two weeks ago (bad timing, in retrospect). I then did a major cleanup of my tank, clearing a lot of garbage on lots of rock and gluing down some corals. The water became cloudy, I couldn't see terribly well, but I though I was careful not to directly crush the new Rainsford's goby.

However, though the other fish survived just fine, the Rainsford goby has been gone a week, and i'm sure now it's gone.

I wouldn't count him out just yet. I've had gobies disappear for MONTHS, not even come out during feeding, and then appear again fat and happy like nothing happened. Just had this happy with a 2 inch long Yellow Watchman to my Reefer 450 about 3 months ago. After the 2nd day he was gone. Figured he just didn't make it. Last week I was looking around and saw a little yellow head poking out from under a rock at the back of the tank. Dude has been alive the entire time.

Don’t give up hope! I have a Orange Stripe Goby that was in my 60G reef and he never came out to eat. I didn’t see him for over a month and assumed he died. When I removed the rock from that tank to go in my 150 guess what? There he was swimming and doing great! I’m assuming he was just surviving off of the reef and must have had a cave out of sight. I think he likes his new hone and he now sits out in front.
