Keep an eye open for tank shutdowns. I’ve gotten most of my fish this way.

I like this idea because if they’ve been in a tank for a while then it’s almost like they have been quarantined and acclimated to tank life!

Speaking of Quarantine, if your LFS is going to perform a 2 week QT I would ask them what the process will be. You have a lot of Fish and the Powder Blue =Ich and the Hippo grows like a weed. Mine went from 2" to now 6" in about 16 Months. I have 3 Tangs in my 5 ft. Tank and they squabble constantly and on rare occasion go to war with injuries. I'm already in the process of getting a larger Tank.

Completely disagree. You can have a blue tang for many years in a tank this size. It’s 5 feet long which if you get some of these fish small would be plenty of swim room until they outgrow. Which would take some time.

You guys are acting like I’m going to put a tang into a 2x2 cube. If the fish is appropriate for my tank long term is not my question. You have no idea of my situation and future plans… that being said I’m %100 getting a blonde naso tang as it’s my favorite fish when it outgrows my tank in a few years don’t worry I have a plan lol.

I’m not set on the sailfish, blue or yellow. Like I said I was just brainstorming and wanted to hear about compatibility, how fish should be added or other unique fish that I should take into consideration.

Since you have a “plan”…totally disregarding the fish health, etc…. You have NUMEROUS very experienced reefers telling you this is a bad idea. Yet, you insist it will be ok interim.
I’m sorry, and I mean no disrespect, but you have no regards for these animals health and wellbeing rather than satisfying your own needs and wants

I have a180 gallon with similar stocking on tangs with a few exceptions, I went with convict tang instead of powder blue due to aggression. I have not yet added a blonde naso but considering.
Consider a tomini tang or other bristle tooth tang. My tomini is great and I didn’t think I would be as happy with it as I am. It’s a workhorse constantly eating algae (so is convict tang) and it orange fins are true to its name and look like flames

My blue tang and Desjardini sailfin have grown from half dollar size to 5+ inches in 1.5 years. The sailfin is the size of a small dinner plate. It happens quick

Melanarus
Yellow Coris
Sixline (will give chase on occasion to tank mates)
Cleaner wrasse
Female Blue star leopard (my favorite)
I stayed away from fairies. I don’t have much experience with them

Love my longnose hawk. Can bully new additions for a day or so

Went with Copperband butterfly instead of pyramid. Happy with decision there

Diamond goby sticks to small area and not sifting sand in all of tank but it’s a new addition so we will see

Always have had royal gramma. Great fish

Could consider foxface. My one spot has been great. Doesn’t swim as much as tangs

I like the chrysiptera damsels. Hardy, cheap, colorful, and not very aggressive. I have a pair of azures, Talbots, and sapphires. Light bioload and fun to watch. Check em out.

Respectfully, we stock for the tanks we have, not for the ones we may have later. Yes, the tank is 5 feet long, but (assuming you get them as juveniles) the Sailfin and Naso will require a larger tank in 2 years. As for the Blue, it will require a minimum of a 180 long-term, and I personally feel they should only be housed in an 8' tank or better.

You need to remember that it isn't just about the size of the specimen, but its behavior(s) as well. Failing to provide adequately for both is poor husbandry. We want the animals in our care to thrive, not just survive.

This is the kind of feedback that’s very helpful thanks I’ve never seen one in person before they looked like a mystery wrasse to me. That’s one off the list :)

Possum Wrasse are beautiful; but may stay hidden in a large tank with aggressive or semi-aggressive fish. They are really good in peaceful nano tanks. I'd just hate to see you spend $80+ on a fish that you might not see much of. Lol.

My possum is always out. I have a 60 cube with a coral beauty angel, golden rhomboid wrasse, isosceles fairy wrasse, melanurus wrasse, 2 lyretail anthias, and a tomini tan. He is always cruising around, gets right in the mix during feeding. I don't even recall him hiding when I firdt added him.

I have many friends in the hobby that would be willing to take the fish (they have larger tanks) or if anything I have a very good relationship with my LFS.

I hate when the tang police come out of the woodwork for no reason are we going to be able to get over this? Like move on with your life. I have also been in the hobby for a while and I’ve had tangs in the past. This was just me brainstorming “wish list” I don’t get why people’s feel like you can’t have tangs for any period of time in a 5 foot long aquarium. Honestly the whole hobby is very cruel if we are going down that route.

You came to a forum asking for advice from more experienced reefers and you got it. I'm sorry if concerns over animal welfare on a forum dedicated to the betterment of the hobby didn't align with your expectations.

As for why the Tang police "come out of the woodwork", it is because we are among those more experienced reefers.

At the end of the day it is everyone's job in this hobby to advocate for the specimens in our charge. You're going to do what you want to do, regardless; but I want you to know that you are only serving to contribute to that "cruel" image.

Not sure about getting another blue tang I’ve had them in the past and they are very aggressive

My Hippo is not very aggressive, however my Purple Tang wants to mix it up with everyone. Powder Blues also have a bad reputation for being nasty. One of my all-time favorites, I may have to risk one when I get my 8ft. Tank Setup.

We are all satisfying our own needs. Look up to see how these fish are collected from the ocean (with dynamite to stun them). How many fish actually survive the travel to the supplier? How many fish survive at the LFS? I’m just saying this is honestly a very cruel hobby. Even if my tank was 10 feet long it doesn’t compare to the ocean.

If the naso gets too big for my tank I’ll give him to my friend who has a 300g. If he doesn’t want it in 2 years I’ll throw it on the grill ;) jk it’ll go to a local reefer for free :) or back to the LFS for a credit. I’ll cross that bridge when the time comes. Cry about it all you guys want but the naso will be in my 5 foot tank as a juvenile!

You have one advantage over the Ocean. You don't have a bunch of hungry Sharks, Groupers, Eels, etc. looking to make a snack out of all the small fish we like to display in our tanks.

You should start a Tank/build thread .... Also the Naso will die in that tank before you think you have to rehome it due to constant stress.

Haha the fish will not die omg you're dramatic. Look up Drew’s lagoon where he had a blue tang in a 25g shallow lagoon. Like I said when the fish outgrows the tank it will be removed. Look up the Yorkshire reefer he has a naso in a smaller tank then mine.
