Fish stocking questions

Hey everyone, I’m just wondering how all of ye get answers to yer questions? I’ve been asking things on my build thread, but I seem to get very little traffic… just wondering is there some sort of setting or something I have wrong?

Sorry you're not getting any answers on your build thread, it can be hard for those thread to gain traction sometimes. This is a much more active subform, what stocking questions do you have?

I love the foxface, great herbivore worker bee to any tank. Mine keeps finding new places to sleep, I think he outgrew his cave.

I’ll sex it and try form a pair around Christmas when I’ll be home from uni for holidays and have a bit more time on my hands. Once the tank is up and running smoothly, I’ll be getting in contact with the LFS in Dublin. Stocking is so far going to be:
Current stock:
Pair of ocellaris
Pair of mandarins
Copperband
Bangai
Pink streak wrasse
Goby & shrimp pair
Yellow clown goby
Algae blenny
Coral banded boxer shrimp
Blood Red shrimp

Too be added in first order of fish. - I’ve been texting the LFS owner and he’ll get things in for me, condition them, keep them all in the same tank for 7 weeks and medicate them as needed etc. I’m planning to add fish at Christmas, and then might think about another one 6 months later.
1st order (probably around Xmas time)
- pair of longnose hawkfish
- Melanrus wrasse
- radiant wrasse
- yellow tailed spotted wrasse
- trio of royal grammas
- green clown goby

That will constitute the first order. I’ll also be picking up another copperband if I see one going that’s one frozen that is the opposite sex to the one I have, and the same goes for another bangai cardinal.

I’m not too sure then what to order for the second order. I’m not too sure which tangs are suited to a 4ft tank.
So far I’ve been think a yellow eye kole tang. Any other suggestions? Also thinking of a regal angel but not too sure… I’d love peoples opinions on this, as if i do add tangs, I’d like to add them all at the same time.

continue posting in my thread just documenting for my own records. Ask questions in sub categories and if they suggestions work out I post them on my thread.

Yeah, general rule of thumb here: Use your tank thread to document your tank and engage with people who reply to it directly, especially on topics of narrow interest (for example, in my tank thread, I often bemoan the state of the hobby with other locals). If you have general questions, use this forum or one of the subforums dedicated to more narrow interests (but still broad enough to see traffic).

With regards to stocking your tank: Overall looks good. I personally would skip on the melanarus. They don't harass corals, but they will go after mobile invertebrates, especially anything with legs. Mine has cleared out any and all shrimp and crabs that have gone into my tank. They are good about picking off pests (especially flatworms) but there are other fish that will do the same job without attacking crustaceans. If you're wanting to pick it up for that purpose, I think your pink-streaked wrasse is already doing that for you. You can also bring in a few Springeri (sapphire) damsels to do the same job. Melanarus do look very striking, but I won't be replacing mine when it shuffles off this mortal coil.

For tangs, almost anything in the bristletooth genus (Ctenochaetus) will work. Tomini are popular, as are the yellow-eye koles. But really, anything in that genus is good. White-tail is nice if you don't mind spending for it. Tomini, white-tail, yellow-eye kole, blue-eye, bluelip, two-spot... Quite a few options, and most of them good for a 4' tank.

You should pin your build thread to your profile so that it’s easier for people to see when they click on your profile.

No problem.

I haven't personally tried multiple tangs in my tank, but I know that some people have done so successfully. Your tank has a bit more volume than most 120cm tanks, so you could try it if you wanted to.

Going strictly off of what I have read, I would steer clear of all three of those tangs (PB, gold rim, hippo). From my understanding they do need more length in the tank, usually more like 150-180cm in length. Other than bristletooth tangs, the only other tangs I've seen people have success with in a 120cm tank are yellow tangs and purple tangs.
