I've lost two flame hawkfish from jumping from the tank. The first lived in my 90 gal for a couple months. I upgraded the tank from one with a thick rim to a rimless 150 gallon. He jumped from the tank the first night. I didn't have a cover on the tank and didn't even consider since he'd lived without a lid for months already.

Then, I got another flame hawk, had him in the tank with a lid for 2 days and he found a way to jump through the cord hole on the back of the lid. I'm sad and disappointed. Losing any fish sucks, as I'm sure you all agree.

I've seen so many tanks with flame hawks that don't have lids, and none of the tanks at my LFS have lids. How do they just decide to randomly start jumping one day.

No real question to ask... just needed to vent.

Sorry to hear about your Hawkfish. Sometimes they jump when they are stressed, like from moving into a new tank.

One thing for sure is that if there's a tiny hole in the screen top, a fish will find its way though that hole.

Maybe try a DIY screen top so you can make it fit your tank near perfectly?

Good luck going forward!

I was able to make a DIY lid using a screen door repair kit and a hacksaw. Works perfectly for me, and I never had issues with fish jumping out of my tank.
