Natural Environment:
Veron: Low to moderate current areas such as lagoons and often associated with turbid water conditions.

Care:
Hardiness: Goniopora is delicate and long term survival (>12 months) is probably less than 10%. Not recommended for the beginning hobbyist, although success is as much luck as skill at this point in our understanding of this coral. It does appear that the more colorful short tentacled specimens, like the pink and purple shown above are more hardy than the more common greenish brown versions with long tentacles.
Lighting: Seems to like moderate lighting in general. Brightly colored specimens seem to like the highest intensity lighting. The specimens above are all kept 24" under 400W 10K MH lamps.
Water Current: Seem to prefer moderate water motion which keeps their polyps gently waving in the water current.
Temperature: Does well within a range of at least 77º to 84º F
Aggressiveness: Appears to be low.
Feeding: Goniopora is photosynthetic and does not take any known foods. The method of death when a specimen dies is usually a long period of decline that may be caused by nutritional deficiency. What is lacking is unfortunately so far unknown. Its natural habitat of turbid lagoons indicates that it may benefit from less than pristine water.
Supplements: Maintaining correct calcium and alkalinity levels is undoubtedly important for skeletal development
Tank Positioning: Best positioning is in moderate water flow, in a moderate to high light area of the tank.

Mine has been thriving in the "dirty corner" under lower lighting for 6 months, but my low light is some people's bright. I found that when I feed frozen food the thing swells up from all the liquids and microscopic particles but i can't tell what exactly that means. Its been growing more arms each month. Must be a good sign! Its not the red kind either. I hear my species is much harder?

This is one coral I've never attempted but would love to try. I've always avoided them because I've never seen anyone keep them successfully or show growth.

Growth shots are proof for me with anything.

These are hitchhikers that came with the rocks - a year later that is. Oh, sorry just realized these are Alveopora, but still cool.

Red I hear is extremely hands off in comparison to the standard "do not hold captive" version like mine. I hear they are very fraggable too and I see tons for sale at the places I go but Im avoiding red since I already over did it once that color! Haha

Pink with yellow eyes

Perfect timing on this tread. I just picked this pink with yellow centers gonipora up at my favorite LFS in Dallas last week. I was hoping to find out more information on flow and lighting. I have it under 400watt 20k but not directly under the light. Enough flow to get movement but not too harsh. I have been wanting one like this for a while and could not pass it up. Full wild colony and not a frag.

Here are mine. I've had the green for about 3 or 4 months and the red for 2 months. Red is always going strong but the green has days where it is just closed up. I found that its only closed when the water parameters are off.
