Fluidized sand bed

Why don't we use fluidized Sand beds. I have been told they can become nitrate factories. But since there is so much surface area that is moving if you dosed a carbon source to feed the bacteria would that not be a great setup. You tumble zeo to a sheer if the bacteria that accumulates to get it into the water and prevent anaerobic bacteria growth (as I understand it). I seems like it would work well. Thoughts?

I agree. I think Fluidized sand filters are great to increase biological surface area. I don't believe it will be a nitrate factory because they don't store waste. That would be like saying live rock is a nitrate factory since it can store waste. I'm actually thinking about adding one to my system.

If I had a stable tank at the moment I would try it just to see what happens

I not sure. I would guess a non silica base one.
