FLUVAL 307

HI, I have a Fluval 307 that I've decided to put on my 65g tank. I've written about it before, but I am over the noise of the Aquaclear 110, and the Aqueon (big one), and I'm ready to move it over. I have a couple questions! The Aquaclear gives me tons of bubbles, and is noisy going into the tank. The other one is noisy where the intake goes into the filter. Can't win.

I don't have room for a sump, wish I did. Anyways, I want to put all of my bio media in it . I have a big box of Marine pure that I want to put into the trays inside the sump. I've got 3/4's of it that I have had in use for 8 months loaded with good stuff I am sure. I have the other 1/4 that I am hoping to add if it will fit. I'd like to get rid of the HOB filters, especially the Aquaclear.

My question: On the left side of the filter is a red tray that holds 4 sponges (2 on each side). Would I be safe to remove that? Can I remove that whole thing and put a bag of marine pure in it's place? Do I need to keep the plastic sponge holder in there to channel the water correctly through the canister? Then Put marine pure in the trays also. The top tray (stacks one one top of each other), I'd like to put a sponge or filter floss in (probably floss cause I have a ton).

Would this work? I don't want all the sponges I don't think. I have searched youtube for this specific setup on a reef but there isn't one that I can find.

Yes I think that would work well. The sponges don’t direct water within the filter, they’re just in the patch of the flow which is determined by design and not what you place in it. However, what you place may determine flow. This shouldn’t be an issue for you though.

I had a Fluval 407 on my 55 gallon sumpless aquarium. The key is to keep on top of the maintenance of external filters. Even though you’re removing sponges and replacing with media, they can start to trap particles. I would clean it every couple of weeks minimum and weekly at best. I had good limited good success with this method but in the end I got fed up with this and ended up buying a tank with a sump.

Think of your external as any media reactor. It will work as expected, just clean it as often as possible.
