Setting up a new 55gallon reef aquarium, bought a Fluval 407 canister temporarily to get the tank going. Removing all chemical filtration and replacing with bio media. I was just wonderful if the 407 would be enough with a small bio load until I get my sump up and going?

A Fluval 407 should be enough for this tank. But since the rock is your biomedia (hopefully you have plenty of rock in the tank), you should be using mechanical media in the Fluval 407, to remove particles from the water (filter floss and sponges).
I am keeping all mechanical filtration, I just ordered 50lbs of base rock, just trying to get my tank started and cycling while I work on getting the rest of my sump put together, thank you

I run a Cannister on a 40GB tank, I stuff all the chambers with Chemi Pure Elite, Carbon, Phosguard, Bio Media and Filter Floss, and top it off with a Poly FilterPad, and use the bottom carbon filter pad too.

Been running for 2 years now, works great!

Do you still run the mechanical filtration pads on the intake side?
