Forza F13 UV Canister Filter

I just switched to a Forza FZ13 UV Canister filter from a Fluval brand, which was recommened by an aquarium store for my 55 gallon tank. Does anyone have any recommendations of changing the filters and how to go about it. When we switched to this filtration system, I think it caused havoc in my tank and a lot of fish died, maybe because there was no good bacteria. I just dont want to risk killing more. Should we soak the new filters in old tank water for a week or so or just put a new one in?

All the bacteria needed to keep the system alive is on the rocks and sand, very minimal bacteria in filters and other machinery. Changing a filter should have no affect on the system at all IME....

This makes no logical sense. Did you do anything else ?

The tank has been up and running successfully since January. About 2 months ago we developed an algea and aiptesia problem. The algea has cleared up by using a Flux treatment also recommended by the aquarium store. We purchased a file fish to help get rid of the Aiptesia and this new filter. We have not changed out the media in it yet, but according to the store they recommend monthly but did not specify if we should replaced everything or only the sponge material. Just want to make wure we do it correctly before just plopping them in. Should we replace everything in in, including the white rock material or only the sponges? The only sold us the two levels of sponge type materials.

no, this was just my assumption I guess since it all happened about the same time. we also were treating the tank for algea so maybe that attributed?

Did you remove carbon and other necessities while performing the flux treatment and do water changes after?
(Trying to solve death issue first)
Regarding sponges etc in filter:
If you have bio media, you can retain/move them to the new. Foam/filters id either remove to clean or replace.

First off Personally I would not let the LFS ie store employee troll you any more. Randy Holmes Farley who is a chemist found that the white media adds aluminium to the water the manufacturer of a certain product denied it. You cannot contact Randy personally . Try # reef squad and ask for him there the guys that volunteer for the reef squad are more knowledgeable than most of us. Not related but sounds like you don't Quarantine your fish. Risky if you don't know signs of illness to me. I also see no reason to replace sponges jut squeeze them clean under running water. Are you using RO water? A lot of things could be going on . Your also dumping in chemicals . Do you research them ? I think no offense your to impetuous. Calm down and take in the knowledge here again # reef squad. I change my Fluval stuff monthly I have no idea why you switched ?

Rock media etc should be kept/ used. You can rinse it in saltwater and put it back in (it will probably get some mulm on it)

100% correct! do not rinse the bio media in fresh water. You can gently agitate in som old tank water and put in new filter.

we did not remove anything before treating, only sprinkled the powder on top of the water then did a water change about a week later. Being on this forum sure will help us in the future!

we did not remove anything before treating, only sprinkled the powder on top of the water then did a water change about a week later. Being on this forum sure will help us in the future!

Yeaaaa there are some specific instructions you need to follow when using that...
My guess is that is what killed your livestock. Be sure to do your water changes and keep us updated!

Just replace it you do have to rinse Carbon to get rid of the dust use Rodi Water

I am taken back about that . I put Carbon in my Canister I consider that as Bio Media . If I am wrong let me know what you think I should call it to be clear in the future.

So carbon would be considered chemical media. Mechanical media being floss, filter socks, sponges and so on. Bio media is anything from bio balls to ceramic pieces or matrix any that good bacteria can adhere to and grow. That said some say that carbon when left in the filter / sump can become bio media once exhausted and others say that if left in too long all the crap the carbon absorbed once the carbon is exhausted can leach back into the tank. Frankly I just change it out once a month but never considered it bio media.

I am on board with Randy Holmes Farley . What would I know . He says anything white puts aluminium in your water XXX Pioson . I also change the Carbon once a Month its just money
