Future state of corals

If climate change did/does completely destroy the ocean reefs, what does that mean for the corals in our tanks? Will the value of our/all tank corals skyrocket? Could the government pop in and take our things for research? We would own an extinct species. Not to mention the law of supply and demand. Eager to hear other’s thoughts.

This is an interesting topic. In fact, in the MACNA 2019 keynote speach, "Vincent Chalias will discuss the myriad of factors that are affecting the culture and harvest of corals around the world, with a focus on Indonesia, past, present, and future."

You'd be surprised the number living things that are extinct in the wild but still found in captivity (there's a captive roach species literally called "Extinct in the Wild Roach" that is thriving in captivity). While your country or state might vary, in general governments don't care much except to simply ban the ownership in the name of conservation (as seen in the reptile community with great frequency), despite captive breeding or propagation. If wild reefs become extinct, governments seizing property is unlikely in most places, but banning ownership is very likely.

This would be the least of our worries, though, considering the consequences of total reef die-off.
