Those are absolutely beautiful but I have a question. What makes them Hornets? From what I see every tentacle in the skirt is blue with yellow tips and there is no ring. I thought the alternating tentacles defined a Hornet.

If you look very carefully the skirt are alternating. Also the bottom right polyp has a red ring if you look very closely. Hope that helps. The zoas were named by the person i brought the colony from.

"Hornets" are identified by the thick center ring in combination with defined alternating skirt colors.

I understand that, but I still don't see much of a ring, and all the skirt looks like blue with amazing yellow tips...I guess I must not see things the same, cause I just don't really grasp either in these....

Just me I guess....

But, I guess since the whole "Hornet" thing is just a made up name, I guess really anything could be called a Hornet. This is just as much a Hornet as it is a People Eater or a Lotus Eater. It's really arbitrary name.

PLEASE don't feel that I am bashing these zoanthids...they are fantastic...

Is it just my computer, or are these black in the middle?

They're pretty neat for sure. I love the contrast of colors. I'd call them butterflies with that interesting pattern in the middle :)

black hornets have yellow ring in the center and yellow alternating skirts.
