(My first post) I’m looking for recommendations on the highest-quality GFO reactor for my system.

System Overview - tank got set up in December 2025 so fairly new
  • ~530 gallon total water volume
    • ~480g display
    • ~50g sump/refugium
  • Mixed reef:
    • LPS
    • softies
    • some SPS
    • multiple anemones
Filtration / Export
  • Reef Octopus Regal 300 INT skimmer
  • ~50g refugium with chaeto (recently added 3 weeks ago, still maturing)
  • Currently running PhosBan in media bags
  • Carbon run continuously
  • NOPOX currently at 30 mL/day but goal is to gradually phase it out over time
Current Nutrient Situation

  • Temp: 78 - 79.5
  • Salt 1.025
  • Ph: 8-8.1
  • Alk: 8.5dkh
  • Cal: 450
  • Mag: 1300
  • Ammonia: 0
  • Phosphate: ~0.8 ppm
  • Nitrite: .1
  • Nitrate: ~17 ppm
  • Tank is stable and livestock looks excellent
  • Recent large increase in fish bioload likely caused export lag, but that was about a month ago

Goals
  • Stable long-term nutrient control
  • Minimal water changes
  • Let chaeto become primary export over time
  • Use GFO more as a precision tool / safety valve
  • Avoid excessive maintenance if possible
What I’m Looking For
  • Best reactor options for a heavily stocked 530g reef
  • Highest long-term quality
  • Easy media changes preferred
  • Single vs dual chamber welcome

Thank you

Hi, Welcome to R2R
I really can’t suggest a high end reactor for you. I just use one from Bulk Reef Supply.

For a system that large you will need a ton of GFO. I looked at the BRS calculator and you will need more than 8 cups of regular GFO, and more than 4 using the high capacity. I’m not even sure a reactor can hold that much, but at the cost of GFO, you may want to consider going in a different direction, possibly an algae turf scrubber if Chaeto can’t do the job.

Thanks for the advice. Which ATS do you suggest?
I saw this one online

It’s a pet peeve of mine when people answer posts with a non sequitur. But! With that size volume I would not run GFO, that will get expensive fast. Instead I would dose Lanthanum Chloride (diluted) if you have PO4 issues chaeto can’t keep up with.

I have one called “SURF” from Santa Monica Filtration company. I’ve used others, but have to say that as far as maintenance and ease of setup it works so much better than some others.

Hopefully, Chaeto alone can keep up with your needs!

Sorry for the newb question. Do you mean like Nopox? I've been thinking of dosing that. What's your opinion on ATS systems?

Have you heard of the AI Blade Hybrid Algae Reactor 16? I'm thinking of purchasing it. Looks expensive, but if it fixes my problem with little maintenance.

I have used one of adaptive reefs other models. For me the problem was limited space in my sump, and I found it messy to lift out the screen to clean it, but yes, it works! I think you would need multiple units for a system as large as yours, though, and they are quite expensive.

I'd steer clear of the AquaReady Sigma 2 for GFO. The sponges are very porous and most GFO just goes right through them. Unless you want a layer of GFO all over the bottom of your sump.

I'm currently using the BRS GFO reactor on my 250gal system. It works well enough, but it's too small for my needs.
