Someone might find this helpful. This is the way I mark my joints when dry fitting my PVC & fittings. I use painter's tape across both fittings and number the joints, so they can be reassembled easily when gluing up. Once the joint is glued in place, simply remove the tape.

Is chamfering the ends of the pipes necessary?

I think removing the burrs is enough for typically lower pressures of aquarium plumbing, but it may be a good idea to chamfer the pipe as well. I haven't personally taken the time to bevel the edges and every joint I've glued has held up pretty well and leak free! ;)
