Great whites own cali coast ?

dont know how many of your are from California but wow there's a ton of great whites right now. As many as 15 spotted in San Onofre. 10 more in Long Beach. 4 in Newport.
Crazy numbers man.

I worked at the Marine Mammal Center of SC, Laguna Beach for 8 years. It's not uncommon to see great whites off Onofre, we used to have to go check for great whites prior to release of sea lions and elephant seals.

I figure there's always something around. Just the numbers seem crazy right now.

I used to live in cali for a while... Tons of sharks there, some days I was almost afraid to go into the water

I lived in San Diego / Los Angeles for the majority of my life and can tell you that shark attacks are VERY uncommon. Ive seen the "guys in grey suits" swim right past surfers. Just have to stay clear of seals because sharks can sometimes mistake people for seals

Bunch of people I work with are surfers. 39 attacks in 2017 world wide. 18 in the US so far. Woman was attacked here in so cal at the end of April. I mean I know the odds are crazy slim, pretty nuts though.

I think the woman that was attacked had a seal jump on her surf board. The shark then mistakenly bit her.

If she was an experienced surfer she would have known this was a clear indicator that a shark was near by. Surfing 101. Stay clear of seals, dolphins are a good indication that the waters are safe and avoid surfing at dust and dawn hours.

She was actually just swimming. She was in about 10 feet of water

The seal population has increased here in the North East and so has the GW sightings. I read that there are breeding grounds for GW around Montauk, scary to think about when I'm fishing off my Kayak.

I was drifting Jones Beach Inlet for Fluke when a seal popped up next to my kayak to have a look see, it scared the s**t out of me. I was fishing the same area and must have snagged a massive Cow Nose Ray that proceeded to drag (Nantucket sleigh ride) me from the safety of the inlet into the open water and boat traffic, I cut the line before it got really hairy. Love the Kayak because it takes me to fishing spots that you can't get to by foot or boat, can do without all the scares though.... boat traffic being the worst...people don't care and half of them are drunk.

As bad as it sounds lots of large sharks/ large predators is the sign of a healthy ecosystem. If they can live there is enough food for them and therefore their prey and so on. Im kinda glad there are great whites since aside from them we only have transient orcas to control sea lion populations.

Most theorize its a lack of larger prey animals due to overfishing.

Due to all the things that I know that exist in the ocean, I refuse to enter :) I will stick to the clear, bottom visible swimming pools.
