Hello, I had metal halide about 12 years ago. They were the cushion double ended small bulbs in a combo fixture. That's my background with halide.
My son in law moved out and left his grow operation in my basement. A 600 watt halide bulb about 12 inches, a reflector hood and a ballast. Can I use this on a 120 gallon 4' long. I'm thinking the wattage maybe too powerful. I want to do an in wall install and I'm all about saving money

That light will be yellow but you can get a 400wt 20k bulb and select the 400wt setting on the ballast.

Do you think I could get away with just one halide bulb over a 4 foot tank

Maybe depending on what you wanted to keep or if you could supplement with something else like t5 or leds.

Hang it high. Put a 400 watt 14,000k bulb in there. There will be a ton of light spill but it’ll work if you place things carefully. That’s a nice reflector

Sounds like a plan, I'm in no rush so I'll start gathering piece by piece. I have an impulse buy vlamingi tang that isn't too far away from need some space to swim
