Hey y’all I noticed my hammer polyps are getting pretty stringy and long. Is this common or is it a problem and if so what causes stuff like this.

They tend to open more when they get full spectrum light and close when the lights go more blue and dim. But if its not receiving enough light they tend to stretch more as well.

Thanks for the info!

I don’t see that in your pics but the long, stringy ones would be sweeper tentacles. That a good thing as they are feeding and protecting the colony. I’d only worry if everything seems to be going stringy which is not normal. Not that sweepers sting other corals, protective move, so just be careful what you put next to it. Other hammers and frogspawn are fine!

I noticed that the polyps have gotten longer and are spread out more.

First I just noticed I said “Not” in my post but it was supposed to be “Note”…Siri! 🤔

Going stringy would be tentacles that are noticeably thinner and longer than most of the colony.

I think your polyps and their tentacles look good. Let me see if I can show you what I mean with a frogspawn where it’s much more obvious than hammers! I’ll post a pic if I have one in my library or I’ll take one and post.

See the long, flowing tentacles? Those are sweepers. Hammer ones won’t be as thin but they will be noticeably different from all the rest.
