So, I picked back up in the hobby after not having had a tank since high school, started with a 2.5 gallon, moved onto a 11.3 gallon and then eventually a 55ish gallon within the span of 6 months.

Welp, the 55 gallon was an old used tank and busted a seam while I was at work, so of course I took the opportunity to upgrade, so here's my adventure with my new 75 gallon.

Here's the 55 before her demise: Up for a bit over a month and just got fish and entering the ugly phase, sump on for a week.

And after her very sad 1am demise(no loss of livestock though!):

So my wife gave me the advice that it is easy to ask for forgiveness instead of permission, so here we are:

Picked up this imagitarium 75 gallon for roughly $100 new, and a stand from a fellow reefer here in Austin who very generously gave it away for free.

Here she is set up with rocks and pumps, I use a seapora 300 HOB overflow. I don't have issues with HOBs and prefer the flexibility over drilling, not looking for convincing on that one. It's worked fantastic, but due to added head height my return pump will need replaced, it's just a little bit slow when maxed out and let's some bubbles accumulate in the siphon tube. It would take a long time to break the siphon but I don't take those chances.

Aaaaaand after a lot moving and getting things settled, the fish are in after being in tub jail for the day. I had to break their tank down at 1am.

I have a tiny little nano light on this bad boy for now, so it will be basically a fowlr with a couple low light softies that will survive until I decide on some budget lights, my nano is mixed reef and I'd like the same here eventually. More live rock is obviously also high on the list.

The stock list as it currently sits:
Black Clown Pair.
Engineer goby pair approximately 2 inches.
Banggai Cardinal x1
Blue Chromis x1
Blue leg hermit x2
Serpent Star x1
Snails in sump jail due to clogging my siphon tube 🤣
Pincushion urchin that's eating my nano until my algae is built back up x1

I think eventually a tomini tang is on the list, but not really sure what else I'd like beyond that. Any advice is appreciated

See y'all on the flip!

Following along!

Cut up a little gutter guard this morning so the snails could be released from sump jail. Ugly, but works. I think a black background is what is up next. Seeing all my junk hanging off the back is bugging me.

We are hardcore in the "ugly" stage, folks, although I really don't consider it very ugly, it makes me happy knowing this little ecosystem is establishing on its own.

Added a large centerpiece rock to the middle and a couple small pieces.

My wife bought my a double barred rabbit fish for my birthday, which is one of my favorite fish. I'm done adding any livestock to this tank for a long while, we are just going to maintain and get parameters stable with what we've got now. Im aware rabbitfish get huge, my stand will take up to a 120 gallon, so when the time comes that's always on the table, she's happy right now though.

Still need to get that black background up.

Overall, a good week.

Howdy, it's been a while. Went through a bout of unemployment and wasn't super interested in posting.

The tank has been coming along great. It is very overstocked currently, but I have been successful so far in keeping the livestock I have and have plans for a 200+gallon system coming next year and my best friend has an established 260 if began to have issues earlier than that.

Since we've been gone I've added a lot.

Much more rock, a valentini and juvenile porcupine puffer, a scopas tang, a humongous pajama cardinal, yellow watchman goby and a princess parrotfish. Everyone in this tank gets a long very well and aren't showing any signs of stress or overcrowding thankfully.

Ive shifted gears to only focusing on softies, and I've introduced them very slowly.

Ive got a few nice mushrooms, some zoas, toadstool leathers and GSP and some sort of trees my buddy had.

I recently built a brand new sump, a 40g breeder and installed a reefmat 1200 which is handling the large bioload perfectly. Im using an IAOAI PS120 skimmer which I believe is discontinued but its chugging along great.

I had a refugium in my last sump which didn't do much for me, so I've decided to go without that for right now.

Im still using my seapora hang on back overflow and I love it, I've had tremendous success with it and zero failures, and honestly I dont even know how it would fail. It's done great through power outages, turns right back on.

Happy to hear any feedback aside from my stocking choices. They are working good for me, the fish are happy and im happy with it and I have a plan for growout.

Thanks for reading!

I am sorry that I didn't see this tank when you first set it up. I also have a 75g display. It looks like you made some nice upgrades but I see that an even bigger upgrade of a new tank is coming. I am an older woman so my 75g is as big as I will be going. 75g are great mid-size tanks. Anyway, welcome back to the hobby and best to luck to you with this tank and the next.

I'm glad to see things picking up for you; goodluck with your build!
