I know this is a reef community, but this is the only community I'm a part of! So I'm going to use this awesome lounge forum to get and share tips for healthy living! After dieting on and off for years, it seems like I'm learning new tips and finding healthy meal ideas all the time. Like this morning. I can't believe I never ate whole wheat egos, turkey sausage, and scrambled eggs for breakfast for fewer than 350 calories!?!? Of course you can buy egos and turkey sausage at the store, but to make your eggs lower in cals, instead of buying egg beaters, just scramble one whole egg, with two egg whites! Genius!

I'm going to be posting often in this thread, and I want all who have great ideas to participate too!! Who says reefers can't be healthy!!

Following along :)

I've been doing the turkey sausage and egg in a whole wheat tortilla for a good breakfast.

Oatmeal is another one I've been doing. My wife made an oatmeal dish she found online. You make it one day and can eat it for breakfast for several. It has very little sugar or butter (if any) and uses fresh fruit for some taste.

Health, a very touchy subject. a very vast subject as well. Both psychological and physical health are connected, so if you improve on one aspect it will lay over to the other. The first step to living healthy is developing habits, along with quitting others. Smoking...yeah, forget about exercise if you do. it aint healthy even if you look it. a cigarette after a run cancels it out. Also, food is huge. Even slabs of steak are healthier than others. YOu have to lay off fat, and learn to eat less (if you are a binge eater like me lol, im sure it will catch up to me one day).

Cooking methods are also good things to observe. A george foreman grill as opposed to a frying pan can make or break a diet. Things that make you feel fuller quicker are good to avoid as well..like noodles, breads...CAKE haha. Olive oil over vegetable oil over butter.

My friend lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks from drinking fruit juice in place of pop, I have recently done the same...not to loose weight (i need my warmth)..but to reduce kidney stones as a risk. Now i drink way more than i did with pop and its a little more expensive, but then again, I dont get cheap fish food either. I do however drink 10-18 fl cups of coffee a day easily, since I was 14...which Is supposed to prevent a form of brain cancer according to some magazine my mom had in her toilet pages (stack of magazines in the bathroom).

Physical movement period is beneficial. The fact that I am not making a shorter post is hypocritical since my butt is starting to get sleepy. Randomly lifting, moving, (doing water changes manually :O Carrying more groceries than normal, taking the trash out at a steady jog the long way out of your house...log splitting and tossing...i mean there are milions of things you could do.

Keeping busy! Having a reef tank helps...as long as you do not put it near a comfy place to sit...thats DANGEROUS lol.

Great tips everyone!! I agree with habits and mind over matter!! I've recently began a book by Bob Green that focuses on the mental side of dieting. A lot of times we work on the food and excersise, but leave out the retraining of our mind and habits, which is key to weight loss and getting healthy!

A snack that I have found I love, and is only 130 calories, are mini toasts and a Laughing Cow swiss cheese triangle!! Love it!! I found the mini toasts right above the cheeses in our Walmart, where they put out a variety of crackers to go with the cheese spreads. Oh, and the cheese triangles are also delicious with sugar-free canned peaches for even lower calories!! :D

I've had to diet cut weight and maintain weight for 15+ years due to wrestling and MMA. I also coach youth sports football, wrestling and baseball. I could write a book on dieting long term and short term (to make weight) from adults and maintaining weight for kids.

^^ Sounds like you have a wealth of knowledge! Any tips you want to share, please feel free! :D

Well, I've decided to do the Weight Watchers program. I like it because it is simple, and you don't have to cut out all the restaurants and stuff that you are used to. You just have to make better choices and trim the excess. David and I are doing it online so it is simple and easy to keep up with.

So how can I get rid of my beer belly? I was a stick until I turned 30 and I've never worked out. Now I have a gut and I'm trying to get rid of it. Too make matters worse I have screws in my foot so I can't do any high impact exercise. Any direction would be appreciated.

Idk if this counts and im not huge into dieting but my gf made me a cauliflower mash that tasted EXACTLY like mashed potatoes last night to go with our meal. It cuts out all those complex carbs and all that butter and sometimes cheese. She just took cauliflower and boiled it until really mushy, strained it, and threw it in the food processor with salt, and a tiny bit of butter and a tiny pinch of cheese. Let it sit and cool for a minute or two and you have healthy veggie mash. We will be making it again for sure.

haha simple answer? dont drink the beer :) bellys are the hardest to get rid of you have to eat right regardless of how much cardio you do. it's all about the diet. however an elliptical is a great low impact work out. however don't pay attention to the meters and counters on an eliptical they are all way off, it takes about twice as long to burn calories as a treadmill, and even longer to burn what actual runningwould do.

The most common advice to people who want to lose "fat" weight is start keeping a log of what you eat and the calories in each dish (there are enough smartphone apps to be able to figure out your calories from what you get from a resteraunt0. Log a weeks worth of food (a day planner works great) and add up your daily calories. Then think that it takes burning roughly 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat, so just to make it simple, if you intake 2000 calories a day (drinks included) you would have to burn 5500 calories to lose a pound that day. (there are apps to give you an idea of how many calories you are burning for certain activites, my advice is to always round those down cause they always seem to be high)

I have found a lot of facts I cant remember about drinking Lemon Water every morning.

Ive been doing this for a couple of weeks now and have noticed a difference in my metabolism and I just feel good now in the mornings.

Great idea!! I will definitely try this!!

Really?!? I always use the elliptical because it shows on the machine that I burn more calories. I'm no runner, so would it be better to do elliptical training or brisk walking on a treadmill with inclines? I heard that it's good to get your heart rate up to about 70% for at least 30 mins a day. When I do this on the elliptical it says I usually burn around 330 cals. Is this wrong?

Intervals are good. During winter I prefer a treadmill to running outside (duh) and do interval running keep a jogging pace, and short (:20-:30) of sprints. And most people prefer to run before lifting its best to run afterwards rather than before.

Drinking water in general will boost your metabolism. When cutting weight I drink between 1-2 gallons a day. It keeps your belly fully to help fight hunger and gives your body something to process so keeps your metabolism running all day. Plus it's good for your overall well being because it flushes the toxins out of your body. You have water all over like in your joints and by replenishing that water it'll help you feel better and hurt less. Plus muscles need water to grow and bring nutrients to the muscles.

Awesome thread, Revgirl!

I enjoy reading about health and am trying to keep a moderately healthy diet while still enjoying my meals. I LOVE food and unfortunately along with this comes a love of foods that are delicious...but perhaps are not so healthy (a deep dish Chicago Lou Malnatti's Pizza comes to mind).

One method that has really helped me out over the years is an increased consumption of fiber in my diet. Because most all things with natural fiber in them are generally considered healthy (fruits, vegetables, nuts) increasing your fiber really has an impact on your digestion and calorie consumption (fiber makes you feel full).

One very popular way of doing this is to blend fruits and vegetables in a blender to make a "smoothie". I've been doing this for some time and I think its a great way to lose weight, increase water/fiber intake, increase natural vitamin intake from fresh greens/fruits, and increase vegetable matter in your diet (which mine sorely lacks normally).

Some may see this as some sort food blasphemy...which i agree it kind of is lol...but I don't think one could argue the health benefits of drinking one a day (even just a few times a week is great!) and for me it has been something that is easily gone back to even if I fall out of the habit of regularly blending.

What i blend (and you'd be surprised how it tastes)

1 apple or pear
1/2 avocado
lots of spinach or kale
some berries of some sort
Coconut water (or RO water is good too, hehehe)

I'd love to hear some other tips and some discussion of diets/healthy living too!

Mike171, I am curious if you have read the "4 hour body" by Tim Ferris and if you have what are your thoughts on his book? I found it fascinating but wondering what someone with your knowledge in the subject matter would think.

Revgirl, I think if you like doing the elliptical you should keep doing it. Def healthy and good for you no matter the numbers! In fact, I should start getting on one too after turkey day, lol!

I haven't read it. I can ask my mom of she has. She's a personal trainer she may have.

And yes I hope I didn't come off as talking down about ellipticals, there's just always something better (and worse) you could be doing.

You can also hit up the bike at the gym. You can adjust the resistance and can burn some calories quick. As for logs, you can register for free online at sites like fitday. I has a lot of common foods and you can create foods. That way you can see your caloric breakdown to better shape your diet.

Find something that allows you to motivate past excuses even if its raining/ cold outside. For myself it was P90x. Been doing it for about 5 years and its still brutal. Hard to make excuses when you can just throw in a DVD in the living room.
Also, Yoga is the foundation. Mix it in with whatever it is that you do.

My number one passion, other than reefing, is helping people live happy and healthy lifestyles, through diet and exercise. I have coached many, many people to a healthier life style.
I have no problem giving free advice to my co-workers when I am approached to do so. My number one goal in life, is to break the "obesity trend".
With that being said, I am a Beachbody Coach. I will post a link to my website that has a wealth a free information, and also
advertises workout programs such as Insanity and P90X. So MODS, I apologize in advance if a am breaking any rules, please delete
