My banggai cardinal was peaceful for months, until he suddenly snapped and started a killing spree in my 20 gallon cube. First, both of my clownfish turned up dead two days ago with no signs of stress or illness beforehand. Then, I caught him brutally and relentlessly assaulting my chromis, the only other remaining fish in the tank. This is after he nearly killed his mate the first week I had him back in October, but I figured that was just intraspecies aggression and that he wouldn't be an issue.
I can't catch the bugger. I captured the chrmos and put him in an acclimation box for his own safety, but I can't get close to the cardinal. If he sees the net, he's gone. If he sees my shadow, gone. He isn't lured out by food and I can't coax him out of the rock structure. He doesn't trust any cups or other potential traps even after 24 hours of them in the tank not moving.
How can I get this demon possessed monster out of my tank?
At this point, I'd really prefer to get him out alive to give to my LFS, but I'm not entirely opposed to killing it. I know it's just being a fish, but I really want him out of my tank before my LFS gets my new fish in on Friday (I ordered the fish before the killing spree began). I do not want him killing my new possum wrasse and yasha goby/pistol shrimp, and I don't trust the store owner's employees to not accidentally sell the fish if they are holding them for me.
What are my options here?
