If I were you, I would go with good Baltic Birch plywood. In my experience, it is the best stuff out there if you want something flat and even and without large defects. You aren't going to find that at big box stores, but any good lumber store will have it. Usually comes in 5' x 5' sheets, but can also be found in 4'x8'. It ain't cheap, but it may actually be cheaper than good maple ply. My whole stand for my 150 is made from Baltic Birch.

I have never liked using 2x lumber for anything that I want to keep straight and square. It's just too hard to find good pieces. And even if they look good and straight at first, most of them tend to change shape a little (or a lot) after a little while. You would probably be better finding a lumber store and spending the extra on dimensional cut Poplar or Fir or something like that.

It was dry but big box hardwood store top choice.
