Hey all,

Not been on in a wee while, but time for a wee return. I live in across the country from my parents nowadays, however as part of their Christmas present, want to help replace an old tank using pieces that I have available and also make their lives easier. My dad kept tropical fish for over 40 years and still has one discus tank to this day, and both of them have taken care of my original pair of clownfish (now 13 years old) and a Randall's goby (now 8, I did not know gobies could live this long) since I left 7 years ago. They understand the very basics of reef keeping but not much, however absolutely love those 3. As they get older, maintenance and other things aren’t as easy anymore so I was thinking of the best plan going forward for them to keep looking after these fish and maybe even expand a wee bit.

Therefore, I’m asking for your help to plan a sumpless reef/macro algae tank for them.

Here is my current plan for hardware (Italics are things that I already have) -

Tank & Stand - Superfish Scaper Qube 60 and Design Stand
Lighting - Scaper LED light, hits about 250 par at the surface, if they want more blue can give them an old ReefLED 50 off a frag tank
Skimmer - Tunze 9004
Wavemaker - Suggestions?
Filter - Seachem Tidal or Oase Biostyle Thermo (if it comes to the UK)
Heating - D-D Controller, but if not using a biostyle thermo, how do people use titanium heaters without a sump or do you use a regular heater with a guard?
ATO - TMC Dual Ato with Float and Optical, reservoir in stand.
Water Changes - Second reservoir in stand with exact measurement of 10 litres so they can simply add the correct measurement of salt, check and using a small pump to send it on upwards after a water change.
Dosing - All for reef if required but I am fairly certain regular water changes will suffice.

Anything else?

Thank you as always,
Cammy

Then use aquacultured live rock from mature systems.

Yeah the tank they’re currently in has Pukani from ‘07 so should be fine on that front. It’s more the equipment I was wondering as I run a zeovit tank myself, 180G sumped so not used to anything without a sump, nevermind no back chamber.
