Has anyone used plasti dip in a spray can on there in-tank sump and had SUPER HIGH nitrate levels after tank cycle? I started my tank over a month ago, I used ammonia and dr Tim’s one and only. I brought ammonia up to 3 ppm and my tank had turned all the ammonia into nitrites then into nitrates within 5 days. When my tests came back with 0 ppm ammonia and nitrite and 100 ppm nitrate I did a 50% water change and my nitrates didn’t seem to move. It has been almost a month now of nitrates at/over 100ppm nitrate and 50% water changes every other day. I’m starting to feel like I have something leaching in to my tank but don’t know what it would be other than the plasti dip. Any help would be nice!

This is what I used. I have heard of people using it before. But don’t know if that is causing high nitrates or if it is something else. Everything else is meant for aquariums tho. But I don’t see how my nitrates can be testing still over 100 ppm after almost a month of being cycled

I believe you should be able to peel that stuff off. I would try to remove it and see if that helps. If you need to black out your sump I would just buy pieces of black acrylic sheeting (thin) and just cut to size.

It’s on the outside of my sump box but inside my tank. I started to peel off the top and seems to be coming off easy. Hoping my nitrates will lower once I peel it all off! Fingers crossed!

Do you really think it will kill my nitrifying bacteria in the tank?

I’m not sure it would kill the bacteria but it could be leaching something out that is picked up as nitrates.

That 'plasti-dip' is what's probably messing with your nitrates. God knows what other chemical reactions it has caused in saltwatr. Peel as much, if not all of it off. Then do 50% WC and then a few days later another one. Add PolyFilter pad to sump. That pad will remove many different chemicals from the water. It's very good for removing meds from a tank. Good luck.

Methyl ethyl keytone and all the others are considered VOC'S...(Volitile organic compounds), same as the PDF I posted.

All that stuff is is really strong solvents and never to be used around anything that wants to live:)
