I wanted to run my reactor with some carbon to clear up my water a bit but I’ve started to notice pieces of the carbon in my sand bed. I use bulk reef supplies ROX 0.8 carbon in my lifegard aquatics turbo nano top flow reactor. is this bad for the tank? What could I do to prevent the from happening?

It's not a good thing, you must pack carbon so that it does not tumble and grind down to small fines. Call BRS and see what they recommend to pack it with.

Back in the 90's I used to run this carbon.

Just grow it: Have you ever added CO2 to your reef tank?
