help with QT for wrasses

in a post today evolved said it didn't matter what type of copper for the flashers/fairies .... just increase over 10 days instead of 2 as recommended. But if ionic copper seem safer then I'll use that too!

I’ve not used it on any fairies yet, not in the last couple years.

It's good practice to slowly ramp up all fish to copper unless you know velvet is at play...then you have no choice to do it over 24-48 hrs.

I really wish wrasse tolerated CP. I have had fantastic luck treating my wrasses with TTM. With the recent problems with velvet showing up more often I've decided to change to copper with the next wrasse I treat. I hate it because of the good results I've had with it. So much so, that if the incidence of velvet retreats to where it was a year or two ago I'll go back to TTM followed by obser.vation/General Cure

I have 3 wrasses in coppersafe for 3 1/2 weeks now. I first followed the advice I read here on R2R. I first fattened all 6 fish up with high protein mysis. Then added CS over a 4 day period up to 2.o. They have been eating like pigs! Next week I will throw prazi at them for a week. I have a 55g with big sponge and aquaclear 11o. BTW, I added 3 tupperware dishes with substrate for the wrasses. they love it.

I would recommend limiting how much time the fish is in the bag water once the bag is opened. Try to get the tank to .018. That way it can just be floated for temp and put right in the tank without being exposed to dangerous ammonia levels. The qt's salinity can be slowly raised over the course of qt.

Also, if you're going to dose prazi, skip the fw dip. A dip kicks off flukes, but so does prazi, and the fish will already be stressed from transport.

@eatbreakfast are you at the point where you regularly treat wrasses with copper regardless of symptoms? I'm curious on your specific wrasse QT protocol :)

I do. I wait until they are eating and active. I do 2 rounds of prazi. Then take 10-14 days to therapeutic levels and keep it there for 30 days.

LA usually packs with plenty of water and oxygen, and the weather is mild, so chances are decent.

shipment was late, but did make it today.
the carpenters was DOA. i didn't go recently either. LA will ship another, but will wait my 14 days.
The mccoskers looks just OK. I matched the salinity in a 10 gal tank and floated it to the temp then netted him in. No visible signs of flukes or ick. Hes just sitting in the same spot not moving. Breathing is rapid but not frantic. I'll give him some mysis here in a bit when he gets settled.

I ended up choosing a BB 10 gallon because of the salinity difference. I didn't want to drop it that low on my RSM, since there are some corals in there. I do admit I like being able to observe him better. I'll slowly raise the salinity in his tank, give him the first round of prazi, then move him to the better tank for a month. ... at least that's the plan today.

I have never been quite that gentle with wrasses. I put them in NSW at the right temperature then add copper to 0.06-o.07 for a week followed by a week of Prazipro ...No bacterial filtration just water movement but WC about 30% (5 gals) every 2 or 3 days replenishing copper/Prazi as appropriate. Have never lost a wrasse except to carpet surfing from DT down the track... have done Coris , Leopard and striped this way without a problem. Must have several plastic containers of sand 3" deep for them to sleep in.

oh and I forgot
6.5 - give the wrasses a fresh water dip to check for flukes. I'll only do this if they are looking healthy and active. If not I'll observer them first to see what should be done.

What helps burrowing wrasses, especially if they're babies, is to put a small pile of aragonite sand along the side panel of a 10 - 20 gallon tank. That single thing will help them be so much less stressed, ime. If they can't burrow, they freak out and will just sit on the floor. I've had a few die with a straight bare bottom, none with a little pile of sand. The babies are also very fragile, so they stress easy. Being able to burrow is like a security blanket. PVC isn't really necessary for burrowing wrasse because if they want to hide, they burrow.

Because the incoming salinity was so low I chose to set up a BB 10 gallon with heater and airstone. I didn't have a filter for this tank so I used prime. I floated the bag in the tank, got the salinity the same, and scooped him in. Considering my shipment came in late I wanted to get him out of the bag water asap. He was shy and not really moving much the first day, but after a good nights sleep (in a cocoon!) he is swimming and eating a lot. I think the quick transfer is part of his good health.

I have not used the nearly empty BB for new fish. I like it because I can see the fish better. I did a big WC and then the first round of prazi in this tank. I didn't see anything on him, but he scratched his head a bit. Then he will go in the "natural" observation tank tonight.
