Hi guys, I recently planned my plumbing and opted to go durso overflow. But found out that my built in overflow are too small to accommodate the durso fitting for 1" and I can't go any smaller since my system is a 180g, and planning to have high sump turnover rate. I'm thinking about going herbie but don't have enough space in my overflow box. Can I get away with drilling a hole in the back and using a 90 facing upwards as my emergency drain? (pictured below) Since it is an emergency drain, I'm also planning on making it 1 1/4" so it can handle a more flow worse case scenario.

I think your idea for a Herbie setup would work. Another option for spaces too small for a Durso is to use a Maggie Muffler (www.maggiemuffler.com) which basically works like a Durso but in a smaller form factor. But in your case if you can find a way to make the emergency drain work, a Herbie setup is safer.

Yes, did that on an old 180 years ago. Just be certain the glass is not tempered.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. It is an acrylic, so it should be a lot easier drilling. I'll go ahead and change my plans to this!
