I just watched two of my hermits bashing together, than one climbed out of its shell and the other took its shell. Then the first crab took the 2nd’s empty shell. They essentially just swapped shells. Is that normal behavior? Or even some kind of mating behavior? There are plenty of empty shells if they want them. It’s nothing too serious, just curious.

It sounds like normal behavior. If the first hermit thought the second hermit's shell would be a better fit, the first hermit could have "encouraged" the second hermit to vacate the premises.
