This morning I noticed a patch of clove polyps that were growing up the glass had dissapeared completely. The glass is completely bare (no green film algae or anything) around where the polyps are missing as well. On both sides of the missing patch all the rest of the polyps are fine and open as normal.

The only change to the tank recently was this week when I added a new group of blue leg hermit crabs and couple astrea snails. I'm wondering if it is possible one of the new crabs has a taste for polyps?

If its the little pea size caribbean blue legs, it is possible although they can literally melt in environment with high nitrates
