My tank is about 6.5 months old and beyond some very early dinos that lasted about a week, it's been mostly smooth sailing. Early on and right after my cycle, I added pods and have been dosing phyto (every day up to a week ago, see below). Clowns were added when I added my pods, and since then I've added pods two more times including amphipods all while continuing to dose phyto. Clean up crews were added a month after the clowns and I just replenished some of my snails. I have a couple patches of green algae on the tops of my rocks which really isn't spreading or getting out of control and one of the reasons why I replenished my snails.
In regards to tank husbandry, I preform 20% water changes weekly on Saturdays and dose Microbial Culture every Sunday. I'm not doing any skimming and for filtration, I swap out filter floss a couple times a week. I stopped dosing the phyto last week as I started to notice algae more (sitting on top of my sand and maybe a film on my rocks). Since then, it's cleared up but I also just switched to some phyto I cultured so I was worried it may have had something to do with the culture as it was my first time doing it.
I think overall the tank is showing all signs of a healthy tank even to the point I'm starting to get coraline algae growth on the pump outlets and small patches on my rocks. Corals all appear happy and healthy, the hammer has since split since adding it 4 months ago, my dragon soul torch is starting to pinch a new head, and the monti on the top left rock is encrusting and appears to be growing.
My question here is related to phosphate readings which appear to be on the high side and where I'm not wanting to chase anything unnecessary, I'd love some input/guidance from those that have been in the hobby longer.
Nitrates - 10ppm (Salifert)
Alkalinity - 8.3 (Hanna)
Phosphates - .55 (Hanna)
Salinity - 35 (Hanna)
Salt - Red Sea (Blue bucket)
And before someone asks what my readings were last week or the last time I tested, I can't really tell you because I purposely don't test that often due to how things have been looking and for fear that it'll only make me want to mess with something that may not be broke. :) What I can say is my nitrates and alkalinity have always been consistent where they are now. Phosphates have crept up since the beginning but the last few times that I've tested, they've been high and in this range.
Thank you in advance for any input/guidance. My real reason for asking about the high phosphates is because I'm wanting to add some acro's and have read high phosphates can impact coral calcification.
