High power long time UPS backup

I've been planning to do something like this for awhile, less for backup purposes but more for using solar energy to run the aquarium during peak energy priced times (the 5-8pm period). Was going to go with a 48V system, but haven't gone very far in the planning.


What DC/DC converters did you use?

I designed them myself, they can convert 6 to 20v into 24 to 32v dc, at 4Amps.

I just need something that can do the 30ish amps for 60 seconds until my natural gas generator comes one.

What battery are you using?

I made a battery array from 12 batteries 12v/7.2Amps, all in parallel. nothing fancy, Just simple lead batteries.

Here´sthe schematic from one dcdc convertor. There are in fact 2 identical parts capable of delivering 4amps, they can be set in parallel to give 6 amps in total.

I keep on wanting to build my setup (I even have the batteries) to do peak load shedding (charge the LiFePO4 batteries when I have excess solar, switch the tank to battery power during peak energy pricing/polluting time), just back burnered the project since some of the DC/DC controllers I was looking at weren't available last year. Of course I picked a 48V (up to 54V) battery system which limits my choices :)

No problem. This schematic works very well, they drive my setup 24/7 for over 2 years now, no malfunctionning at all so far. I use a 15vdc/15amps power supply that drives 6 of these dcdc convertor for everything in the aquarium but the heater. We had a flood last year and a 38hrs power rupture, it supplied power from the battery pack the whole time (with reduced light level to safe battery power).
