HOB filter for refugium?

I’ve been battling green turf algae in my tank for a while, nutrients are a major issue at this time, nitrate was at least 25, got it down to around 15. Still have issues, years ago I had a refugium on a 65 and it worked well, I have a 24 cube and no room for a traditional sump/fuge, but I’ve read that one can use a filter. I happen to have a spare aquaclear 50 I’ve never used. Would this really be effective?

What kind of macro algae are you using? What about the light?
