How are biological media made?

I was wondering how is biological media like marinepure blocks made to be super porou? I was thinking we could use that process to make artificial rock.

So, a momma block and a papa block get together and....well, you know....

Seriously though, I'm not sure how it's made. Guessing it's compressed in a mold in a "company secret" type of process. There are artificial rocks out there. To me, those rocks are pretty solid and not porous like the blocks, so you might be onto something.
