How big of a sump?

I'm thinking about a wet and dry sump for a 29 gallon reef but how big should I have if I want good results? Should I have a refuigium? I'm new to sumps so inform me..

Refugiums are good but not necessary. Dont do wet/dry. Just a good size sump to house skimmer, return pump and whatever other filter your aquatic heart desires. There is not much nutrient export from macro algae, but refugiums are good if you want to house pods though.

Why not a wet dry? If he is just running a fish only tank then a wet dry can't be beat for processing ammonia and nitrites. If it's going to be a reef tank then yes go with a sump. Bigger is better in most cases, but take a min to see how much space the other equipment in the stand will take first. Significant others generally frown upon aquarium equipment sitting outside the stand :angel:
