How do you handle BTA's?

I only keep hosting anemones so i dont have much expeirence otherwise.

Bubbletips can be handled with bare hands and are not really sticky to human touch like a carpet, their sting is much less potent.

Magnificas - are sticky but not fish eaters so they dont really grab hold.

Mertens carpets are sticky but easily pull off.

Haddoni you better off flipping it over and handling the base cause it will stick to you and can cause irratation

Gigantea - hands down the strongest when it comes to grabbing, my 1.5 foot one wrapped around it previous owners forarm and he had to go to the hospital right infront of me.

My hands are used to it by now so i dont get phased but i still keep away from haddoni and gigantea.

My friend gave her blue carpet to another friend because she kept losing fish to it. She picked it up and put it in a bucket, no problem. Her friend took it home and picked it up, put it in the tank. 3 days in the ICU later they pronounced her stable.

Nice summary - When i worked a LFS back in high school i use to handle most of those all the time too...its crazy how your hands can just get use to it...but i agree i saw a few people have some bad things happen with the Gigantea. Feeding was always a good time though!! :tongue:

Its not really your hands getting used to the stings but the skin on your hands being thick. Just like with most jellyfish, you can touch their tentacles with your hands and not be affected by the stinging cells due to the thickness of the skin.

WOW-hospital trip? I would have never guessed that. I have only ever owned one and it was either a long tentacled or a bta, can't remember, but it was just mildly sticky. Fun to feed though.

yep, I was snorkelling in HI a couple years ago, there were a couple different types of jelly's in the water. The one kind was ok, stung but was more annoying than anything. But some other kind, never got a visual... got me in the side and on the shoulder, I felt like I had been shot with a shotgun.

Between diving and swimming in Jersey for 23 years and living in the Keys for a few summers, I have yet to find a jellyfish that would sting through my palms. Legs and arms will get stung though, but you build up a pain tolerance to that. Man-o-War isn't actually a jellyfish so I'll pull out a technicality on that one :) They do inflict some serious pain though.

lol you are correct sir. It's a Siphonophorae but i was trying to slide one past you. Good thing you are on this side of the world because i'm sure a box jelly might have some effect :wink:

Yea, I'd swim away as fast as I could from them if I ever saw one.
