I recently read a thread about snails going out of their tank for DAYS and still live. So, a question came to my mind, how long can a snail live inside a shipping bag with no oxygen? I heard some online stores ship them without oxygen and sometimes even with NO WATER. Any help?

The last time I picked up snails I had one go missing. figured I miscounted or something... the next day ( 24 hours+) I was getting food off the top of the canopy and low and behold the snail was in a food cup.. astrea.. so they can be out at least that long. I popped him in the tank and he was fine..

Will it be the same as if the snails was in a shpping bag with no oxygen?

I would assume there is some stress.. but remember many of our snails in the wild will be exposed at one point or another to the elements based on how the shallow reefs work. the operlocum (sp) of many snails acts as a barrier to things getting in and it also helps keep things in the shells. they are tough creatures. no water and no oxygen is not what I would call ideal shipping but short time shipping it might work..

They do one day shipping with no oxygen so the water doesn't make any noise, because the shipping company here wouldn't accept any water to be shipped. Anyways, should I do an experiment and order some online? They'll be shipped with no oxygen.

ReefCleaners ship their snails with a wet paper towel in the bag, no water. He does 2-day shipping and I've had an order delayed an extra day and they survived. (there was once a hermit in the bag and he survived too)

So which one would be better, shipping snails with no oxygen or no water?

I have bought FW and SW snails in bags with no water, just damp paper towels shipped USPS priority mail that takes several days.

Perhaps saying no oxygen isn't the best description, they very likely can still get oxygen out of water (probably depending on species), the issue is when they dry up. They have oxygen in the bag, and the damp towel keeps them from drying out. They do not appear to run out of oxygen after a few days in a sealed bag.

Maybe I'm missing something but didn't read everything in great detail... why would there be no oxygen? So long as they are damp they should be able to survive a very long time. In a shipping bag they don't use anywhere near all the oxygen present.

Wait, if ammonia became more dangerous in the bag after you opened it, how can you acclimate the livestock that's in there?
