I am trying to figure out the best option for me for dosing elements for my new build. The tank is a 125 gallon and will be SPS dominant--it's just too early to fill it with sticks . When I say "best", I am basing it on a few things:
1) How long the solution lasts
2) How many dosing pumps are required
3) What is the cost of the solution?
I have 2 Neptune DOS units (4 total dosing pumps), but I had hoped to use 2 of the dosing pumps to complete automated water changes. No, it's not a huge deal to get some buckets and do a 10% to 20% water change, but I would rather just hit a button :)
Here are some things I am considering
1) Triton elements (not the Triton method--I will continue water changes regularly). I like them because they include most any trace element I would ever care about. I have used them in a prior setup. The only issue is that it would occupy at least 3 of my pumps, which would require me to get another DOS for water changes
2) ATI Essentials pro. This is much the same as the Triton elements in that it is Calc, Alk, and Mag combined with trace elements. However, it is in 2 solutions rather than 4, which means I would still have a DOS available for water changes. The price is essentially the same as Triton Core 7 elements. However, I'm not sure how long it will last --I will be required to dose more volume each day, but I'm not sure the original volume of each container is, so it may be a complete wash.
3) @Randy Holmes-Farley new 2 part recipe. I believe this would be the least expensive option (buy products in bulk from Amazon) and would also allow me to have a DOS available for water changes. The only drawback here is that it does not include additional trace elements. While dosing trace elements isn't required, I do feel it can be beneficial. It is also a hassle to dose trace elements by hand, and I would not feel comfortable adding them to the dosing container to try to make a balanced formula.
So here are my questions--
1) Anyone using ATI essentials pro? How large of a container is it? How long is it lasting you in an SPS dominant setup and what volume is your tank?
2) Has anyone added trace elements to Randy's new 2 part recipe? If so, how were the results?
3) What other options should I be considering given my 3 requirements at the beginning of the post?
