I have an algae/dino/diatom / nutrient problem and I’m trying to understand if over-feeding is contributing. I know there are lots of factors to algae/nutrient issues so knocking them off one by one. I don’t think I’m over feeding but would love your feedback because I've been questioning the amount generally for awhile. I also worry that I might be under-feeding...
Currently:
Morning: 4 frozen cubes of some combo of Mysis, Brine, Blood worms or Formula 2
Midday: A couple of pinches of new spectrum small pellets
Eve: A couple of pinches of new spectrum small pellets
Obviously lots of algae for them to pick on everywhere in the tank right now but they're not doing a good job.
Also a healthy population of pods (they seem to thrive on the algae etc too).
Pretty much the fish eat everything within 45 seconds. Except for a purple/yellow tang issue, I have no other aggression in the tank (and tons of tangs).
Fish List
2x Blue Hippo Tang
1x Atlantic Blue Tang
1x Kole Tang
1x Tomini Tang
1x Purple Tang
1x Yellow Tang
1x Powder Brown Tang
1x Achilles Tang
1x Blue Throat Trigger
1x Royal Gramma
1x Australian Stripey
Various snails / crabs / Shrimp / Conchs etc.
Coral:
Moved most to a frag tank because of nutrient / algae problem but there’s a cabbage leather is impossible to kill.
System:
About a year old but I had a hard reset about 6 months ago due to an Ich outbreak and the chem I used worked on the ich but was a disaster for the beneficial bacteria which was previously working beautifully.
Substrate:
Mostly dry Rock but some Tampa Bay Live rock.
CaribSea Arag-Alive Reef Sand (not deep)
Tank:
400 Gallon Display (72”x36”x34”)
~30 Gallon Lifereef Sump
30 Gallon Fuge with Kessil H160 Tuna Flora LED Algae Grow Light (12 at night)
Flow
2x Echotech MD 60 on each end 1/3 down; one slightly to front and one to back on linked gyre running at about 100%
2 return variable nozzles off of independent COR20s
Filtration
80W UV Sterilizer
Lifereef Skimmer
2x Foam Filtration pads
Carbon Reactor
Lights
2x Echtech XR30 G5 Pro (ends)
1x Ecotech XR30 G6 Pro (center)
2x 60” Reef Bride Blue LED Strips
2x Kessil A500X - Tuna Blue
Mostly I only run the Ecotech lights at 50% right now because I don’t want to encourage the nastys, and I have also started a 3-4 day blackout because I'm never able to syphon out all the algae. So trying to kill it all and then see if I can clean it out (and also nuke Dinos etc.)
Levels
CA / MG Stable
Something that isn’t coral is eating ALK. I’m guessing it’s Coraline which is growing when the other algae / Dinos / diatoms doesn’t out compete it. I’ll find out durning blackout as nothing should be growing so alk will stay stable.
NO3 (hanna): All over the place based on if I just did a WC etc. Usually hovers between 10-20
PO3 (hanna): Currently zero but I think it’s because the algae etc. is eating it all.
How much should I feed my fish?
Thanks!
