I was in a similar situation. A few remarks
Regular tests are a mess. Fairly inaccurate (Phosphate, nitrate color based charts). Testing for Alk, Calc, Mg is actually fairly easy with the tests, but It's awesome to have a regular picture, automated.
It allows to monitor for swings, and you will learn that testing numbers depend on the time of day, mainly Ph.
I have a strong correlation variation of alk with Ph swings, not surprisingly.
Now on the dosing... I had the same mindset. I installed a dosing pump, hooked to the trident.
Its not a "smart system". The trident essentially acts as an on/pff switch, it will stop dosing if your levels exceed a certain interval. It is added security.
On a new tank with low sps, I dont think you will need dosing.
I am actually using my dosing pump to dose reef energy ... not calcium or Alk, at least for now.
The negative effect of the trident is that it is going lead to us chasing numbers and overreacting.
Apex, if you are listening, please make a trident that test for phosphate and nitrate!
