I don’t know much about the size or temperament of a banana eel, so I won’t comment on that.
The two that I think you should reconsider are the Achilles tang and Emperor Angel. They both would be better off in a larger tank.

most likely banana eel gets 2ft long but they are ambush predators and mostly hide

what would you add instead of the emp and the achilles?

I’d be worried about the banana eel attacking your fish in a tank that size.

I would go for a different eel like a snowflake instead.

There aren’t that many choices for tangs and full size angels in a 5’ tank. You could consider a convict tang, Kole tang, or maybe a tomini. As far as angels, I’m a sucker for a regal angel, but I don’t really know of any other full size angels that would work in a tank your size. Have you considered any of the dwarf angelfish? Any of those would work.

They’re one of the most docile but they’re still a fang tooth. They’re meant to be in a tank with really big semi aggressive fish, but you cant have fish big enough in a 140 gal. If you want an eel with a better temperament that still looks similar to a banana i would go for a golden dwarf.

I would say pass since they are expert fish for a reason and you have to build the tank around them not the other way around. I say switch with a bristletooth tang or a yellow (biota) but make sure its big enough so the eel wont eat it if you go with biota. I have 3 fish in a holding tank now (young PBT, snapper and an emp angel) that need to get bigger before going into my main tank. Really any if the powder tangs need minimum six feet, very active tangs and cranky if they feel cramped.

I disagree, as long as the fish cant end up in its mouth the eel likely wont bother them if OP keeps it well fed. Eels get used to just hanging out and getting hand fed and when trained that way usually are very docile. Always a risk, but my 4 eels are like that. I have two fang tooth eels, theyve eaten a damsel, midas blenny and a tiny cleaner wrasse. So clowns, dwarf angels (or the girdled like I suggested) and other 3-4 inch fish I would say is fine for this eel. If it were a tessa I would 100% agree

Regarding suitable fish, this is some of the best advice I have read on R2R in my short time here so far.
I absolutely agree that the tank should be built around the fish requirements when it regards certain species.

Thanks! Its why I never got an achilles (besides price) as they live in surge zones, which in my researching of tangs seems to be one of the few tangs that do that. I decided to stick to other powder tangs because I wasnt sure my big tank would have enough flow. Expensive fish to gamble with and I would rather someone with more experience and knowledge care for the fish vs me messing up and it dying in my care

so can i add the eel 1st get it use to getting fed its full so it feels the need to not hunt then add fish after it?

this guy keeps japanese dragon eel with pretty small fish pretty much like what you said they get use too getting free food so don't feel the need to hunt for themself mind the fish stay on the other side of the tank to the eel haha don't blame them :P

Shouldnt be an issue! I have 4 eels with a marine betta, clowns, a wrasse and a sailfin. Planning on adding more
