Your tank is similar size and age to mine, what difficulties are you facing?

Hello JonoH.

My troubles I think have been with my obsession to reduce nitrates and even eliminate phosphates (forgive my naivety). In retrospect I believe my water was too clean (sterile). I have been focused on controlling alkalinity and calcium and have not had a clear understanding of the importance of the biological build up which is inferred by nitrate and phosphate residuals. I think I have been running the tank as a chemist would, not a biologist (though I am neither). The result has been months of horrible carpets of red algae and the loss of a lot of coral.

Since my recent retirement, I have had more time to research the matter. I am in the midst of rebuilding the nutrient levels in my tank. I would love to hear more about your experience.

I am new to R2R. I am on my third tank, but my first two were only on-line for a year or so before I was relocated. My current 250 gallon tank has been online for 2 1/2 years now. I am not yet happy with the results and realize how challenging this hobby can be. I definitely need support and think this is the place to be!

Sounds correct to me my friend. The desire to have an extremely "clean" tank with very low nutrient numbers has always been a draw. However, I think we're finding out that each reef system is different. Research, observe, and learn from your mistakes. This is a humbling hobby with amazing lessons. It sounds like you're well on your way. I wish you all the very best.
