I didn't know where else to post; need some support

Hi,

So, I'm sorry for the broad subject but I didn't know where else to post. I suppose maybe it's for good vibes or prayers.

I was mowing the lawn yesterday and our two wheaten terriers are known to charge the mower. Realizing how dangerous that was we've gotten in the habit of correcting and training them to stay away. They've done great. Yesterday, Penelope, our two year old wheatie charged the mower. She was behind a fence and I didn't see or hear her coming. I guess ran up behind me and pushed the chain link fence hard enough to reach the mowing deck and she suffered an injury to her lower jaw. I'll spare you the details. We rushed her to her regular vet who referred us to the emergency veterinary hospital 40 minutes away. We rushed over and they determined her jaw was severely injured and referred us to a third hospital that specializes in that area of the dogs body.

So, here we are. Day 2 in a hotel room waiting to find out what's going to happen to our little angel of a pup. I feel so incredibly guilty about what happened and helpless that I can't take her place. The doctor asked us about her having a possible elongated bottom jaw as a slight birth defect. He'll be contacting her vets to find out and follow up with CT scans. He already warned us of the possible decision we have to make here depending on the news the CT scan reveals.

I'm sorry to bring a rain cloud into the lounge today but I'm really struggling with what happened and just needed an outlet. Please cross your fingers for us and Penny.

Thank you all for your support. It's been a challenging two days but we received some good news.

The CT scan revealed that her jaw joint was in great shape. It was almost a full fracture across her lower jaw. They operated on her around 330PM and the doctor said it went better than he ever expected. Her canines will be slightly smaller as they needed to grind them down to allow room for swelling. The fracture interfered with blood supply to the area so they also performed a root canal but managed to save all her teeth. The jaw was wired together and she'll make a full recovery in about 6-8 weeks. The next few weeks will be tricky with feeding as she's only allowed liquid diet and must wear a muzzle. In all reality, this is nothing that could have happened. We are so grateful for all your thoughts, prayers and good vibes.

I spent th last two days crying wishing I could take her place. These little guys are our world.

We will keep you all posted.

I am so happy she gets to come home today. what a freaky, crazy accident. You guys are in for a busy couple months with getting enough nutrition in her for healing, but I am sure you will be up to the challenge. Speedy recovery for the pooch!

Thank you all so much for your support. I literally spent 3 days in a hotel room crying over what happened.

Her surgery went really well and the doctor says we are about 70% there. The next three days are going to be extremely tough as she's not allowed to really do anything. Our other dog is spending the weekend with my sister while we keep her very bored. tberes quite a bit of medicine to keep track of but she's always been good about taking her meds.

As far as food, we basically make soup out of her dry food. Per the Doctor, we boil water and stir in her food then blend and serve after cooling. She's such a brave dog and we are happy she's home. Oliver, her older brother, will be home on Sunday and I'm sure he's looking forward to it.

Glad everything worked out...no matter how careful you are, pets still seem to find ways to get themselves in trouble :(

Penny is recovering well. She's still sleeping a lot but I'm assuming the opium based pain killers maybe the culprit. At the same time, we are starting to see some of her sass coming back as she greeted us in the bedroom this morning with lots of love.

Annoyed with her head gear, she keeps rubbing up and down our legs as she pleads us to remove it. It certainly puts a smile on our faces seeing that she's starting to be herself. However, no matter how cute, the head gear (muzzle and cone) stay on- doctors orders. We return for a check up and additional X-rays in approximately 3-4 weeks and hopefully get rid of her wires and equipment.

We spent the morning and afternoon laying out on the deck as the weather seems to be breaking for us here in northern NJ before we put her cone back on.

Penny seems better and for the first time this morning showed some eagerness to play. We entertained her a bit but then it was time for medicine which has the above effect. Her follow up was scheduled for the 25th of June.

Her doctor wants to take additional X-rays to make sure everything is healing correctly and reshape her bottom canines. Hopefully, that's the same day they remove the two wires and we get the approval for her to be a dog again.
