I am trying to make my own frag plugs.. but I can not get my hands on aragonite sand only Quikrete play sand.. which is silica.. I hear two sides.. people are saying it is bad.. and others say its fine.. is there really any big deal using silica base sand. I understand corals will take longer to grow on the plug.

In that small quantity, and especially if you cure them, I can't imagine it would be that big of deal, but, I think most would disagree. Not sure what the implications may be on introducing silicates, or, if there would be more potential than that resulting from glass.

I always wanted to do this, use rock salt, and make them square; maybe emboss them.

Tagging along.

I have never made frag plugs, so I know nothing about that. But when it comes to silicates, I know diatoms feed off of them, so you may have a diatom bloom.
