I need some reeeeffing help ova here!

We’ve had our tank now for 2 months. It’s has been established and I am looking for some information regarding my two clown fish. I have a male and female. And the male and female have been loving there environment. Along with the snails and hermit crabs.
My concern or question is I have noticed that the female has not been swimming around like she normally does and seems to be guarding this one spot nestled under some live rock. Does anyone know what this may be pertaining to?

She’s been guarding this area for two days now. I’ve done some research and I think she may possibly be looking to lay eggs.

Ive also read the eggs usually do not make it in a tank environment due to certain specific conditions.

I am looking to see if there may be any other reasons for this behavior that I should be concerned with. Does anyone have any input?

When I walked in on mine in the night and it was floating vertically next to the overflow, I flipped on the lights and it bout jumped out of the tank.

I can only say, they are very odd and entertaining creatures.

My female, Sally (Jack is the male) has been digging out a corner. I had originally thought the sand was being moved because I redid the flow. So, I got some heavier sand, cleaned it (not fun, took a while) and then slowly placed it in the hole.

She dug it out and this time, she dug it to the glass and made it 2x wider and longer than before. Kinda like she is telling me, move some more sand here and you will have one giant pile of sand in your tank.

One of mine likes to swim in and out in front of the WAV pump swimming against it like a treadmill, maybe it's trying to build up some muscle for an escape attempt lol

Mine jumped (not out of the water, but right up to my hand) when I was feeding. She came from the bottom and all the way up to the top, slapped the top of the water with her tail and boogied down into her hole she has decided to make and keep.

I actually just read a book on light pollution and sarcadium rhythm. Clownfish eggs need an onset of dark period to begin hatching. They will readily pay eggs, but most reef tanks don't have the proper conditions for hatching. Probably after long enough gestation you could lights out and some might make it.

From what I have learned female clowns need to be older to breed. Like 2 years or so. If you have a younger pair it's possible they haven't chosen a sex yet. You can usually tell this is happening when they become aggressive toward each other.

Like others have said they will constantly make you turn your head.

Another thing to keep in mind is they do get territorial. They will pick a spot and it’s their spot. But over all, the 6 I have in my 115 tank all have different mind sets. They are all slowly finding that nems are their for protection big time. Disputes break out between them and they run to the nems which ends the fight. As stated above thought they can mean some of the meanest of reef fish for their size.

Look up maroons if you want to seen what a devils spawn is! Haha. The other clowns fall under devils. Also once they start putting in size try not putting other tank mates that are smaller than they are. My brothers two black Ocy’s he had killed an flame angle because it was just bit smaller then they where. I feel clowns are the last part you want to get in a tank. Just my opinion and observations with clowns over the past few months. By brother has been around salt tanks a long time. And we chat all the time while watching the tank.
