I think I made a bad choice at work

I work over-nights 7pm to 7am . I have been on the same shift since I was hired 3 years ago. There was a position posted that seemed interesting so I applied for it on Tuesday via email, it was about 11pm through the work computer. Wednesday they called me and set up an interview for yesterday at 1pm.
I got off work at 7 am went home tried to get some sleep (didn't really work) then went into the interview. The first part of the interview was , I guess you would call it a competency test , I had to write a memo from what I guess you would call the CEO to all staff. Easy peasey. Then a spread sheet with a list of the general managers and how long they have been at our facility and how long they worked for the organization. I dont have any experience with Excel and let him know , he said just try it. I spent about 15 googling info and couldn't find anything. He had said don't be afraid to ask for help , so I asked him , " Hey i couldn't find any info on the web , any ideas where i could find this info.?" He tells me go ask the CEO , that I would have interact with him everyday. ........I sat there for a few minutes and then called him back in and bowed out of the interview. I will admit I was scared to interact with the CEO , I am basically the bottom of the food chain and work over nights and the only time i have had to deal with administration is the very rare occasion they do a walk through at 7pm. I didnt want to have to wear a suit several days a week , and didnt want to move from the shift where i knew who i was working with and spending all my time with upper management.
That being said I woke up have dreams about it and feeling that I let myself down. It would not have been more money , just a step sideways. It would have meant working more days but less hours per day. I dont know I am just twisting myself up now because i realized I was the only one there for an interview and it is usually a manager position......

Don’t beat yourself up over it. No one =(except trump;Jawdrop) starts at the top, so don’t feel like you bottom of the food chain. Our ceo started in the mailroom and tells every chance he gets.

If it’s not right for you, it’s not right. I would say if you are thinking about a job change any interview practice can’t hurt. Even if it’s going bad, stay. worst they say is no. But you get some practice in. Interviewing is a skill.

Nothing wrong with staying in a position, just don’t stay because you are hesitant to leave. Stay because you like it and see a future.

No biggie. Stress is a killer. You dont want a stressful job unless you live for being stressed out.

If it’s not a direction you felt comfortable taking, then you did the right thing. It’s always interesting to see yourself out of your comfort zone, sometimes you see something you like, something you don’t. That’s life - we only have one and we are allowed to be selective on how we spend our time, especially what pays the bills.

Thank you guys ..... I feel somewhat better. This was my weekend off so I had much time to brood. Once I get back to work I am sure I will be fine. Although I will have a new .....i guess you would call it area supervisor , starting Monday because my old one (had him about 1 month) transferred to days. I have been in my position about 2 1/2 years , worked here for about 3 years , my first area supervisor retired last November . The one who replaced him was 25 and lazy. I had to cover for him so many times it was ridiculous. He left a month ago to join the Navy. Any way , I am staying in my spot , got my groove worn in there .....and within the next 4 or 5 months due to changes it will become the sweet spot to work in.

Never EVER feel like you are less than anyone else. You are not!

I came from a poor family. Like chipped beef and bread poor. I work minim wage jobs til I went into the army. After that I took up a masonry apprenticeship and became a journey man. When the hard time hit I was out of work for 3 years living back home with my parents.

Took up a brick repair job through a friend At some millionaires house. After 3 weeks of working for him he asked if I would leave the guy I was working for and take care of his house and yard full time. I took the offer. He was a bear when he talked to people but treated me like a son. Very down to earth, didn’t like bs or lies.

9 years later he sold the big house. He sat me down and asked what I wanted to do, work at the dealerships part time and at the house the rest. Pay would only be $20 a hour. I told him that’s not where I saw myself going. He told me not to worry, he’d call around and find me the same kind of job I had now. He called his friend, who happened to be on his yacht in Europe. Face times with him for 2 minutes and I had a interview and a pre determined salary.

Went and met the man. He was a real bear to at first. He asked when I could start, told him I would need a week to get my affairs in order. He was good with that.

Been working for him for 5 years now. Paid for my house, got all my benefits, 6 weeks off a year, my truck he got me cost more than my house, can use any of the vehicles, jets, helis, properties and boats.

My first boss always told me no man is greater than another, my new boss tells me no man is greater than another. See the train of thought they have?

At first it seems scary to talk to a higher up, they are no different then you or me. Don’t be afraid to ask smart questions (they love that) and don’t be afraid to meet with the ceo to see if it would be a good fit for you.

Speak your mind, don't lie, don’t pad stories, be the first to admit when you messed up. Be to work on time. Work late when you should, don’t ask questions about family or affairs. Only talk about the subject they bring up. Don’t tell others things you hear. If they seem to be having a bad day, avoid contact. If in a edgy mood, no questions. Things they value most are time and health.

That’s all you need to do to work in that league.

From what you said you may have not been mentally ready for that position yet. But next time the opportunity comes you will be. Only thing stopping you, is you.

14 years ago I said yes to something I was scared of. Tomorrow morning I’ll be sitting in the kitchen having coffee and watching the news with a multi billionaire then going out on the boat!

IMO (respectfully) human resources or whoever set up the interview should clearly have scheduled your interview at an hour more convenient to you (and understandably still within their shift). night shifts take the hardest toll on the human body.

Actually they did good , usually they hold interviews at 11:15 lol and usually when you don't have that night off

Here’s a tip: Treat the CEO with respect, but as if you don’t know he’s the CEO. They love that!
