Ice Cap 30 sump

Has anyone drilled a few holes into a sump ato container to add a refugium space? I’ve got an ice cap 30 and don’t want to use the 5.5g ato container cause I’ve got a 10g one but don’t want to waste that space. I was thinking you could drill a hole about half way up here figure 1 and then do 2 at different levels at figure 2 one for back up going right into the return pump chamber. I would buy a few overflow strainers so nothing got into the return pump area that would clog the pump. What’s everyone’s thought?

Thanks. Would it be best to have 2 returning to the pump area in case one gets clogged for whatever reason? Going to work on that next week on my days off.
