Hi everyone. I need help identifying this brown algae and finding how to rid my tank of it. Tank is six months old. I thought it was diatoms, but it’s been a couple of months now. I’ve tried everything from blackout to yeast… it’s slimy, covers pretty much only the rocks and the snail/hermit shells. It dissipates to practically nothing when I touch it. No CUC has helped… at my wits end!

Let me take some pics, but I thought Dinos had bubbles on it. This has no bubbles. Looks like tannish hair algae

Hi. Sorry but pics won’t come at least today…Ok so I’ve looked through a bunch of these threads, and let’s say I’m 95% sure I’ve identified it a chrysophytes… all of the characteristics… color, shape, etc… what’s the best way to deal with this??

Crysophtyes are also a protozoan like dinoflagellates so the treatment is similar. Elevated nutrients, regular suck out, slow or stop water changes and blackouts. They can be a real bear much like Dinos. They need something to outcompete them for positional ranking in the aquarium.

Thanks for the info! I manually removed as much as I could, dosed 8ml of Reef Vibrant, and they were 100% cleared out in two days!
