I have a JBJ 45 that's been up and running for about 6 months. Live rock, sand, coral, and about 9 fish. I have a reef octopus hob skimmer. All in all everything is fine but I think the tanks filtration system leaves a little to be desired. I supplement the filtration by adding white filter material underneath the sponges in the filtration stacks. This works well but due to the size of the stacks begins to clog in about three days, and I just don't think this system flows that well. What would be a good way to improve this?

I don't use the sponges. I use a filter pad at the top and chemipure in the middle.

I bought the InTank media baskets. Filter floss on top, purigen in the middle, chemipure on the bottom. I do need to change the filter floss every few days usually.

I am looking at getting a jbj 45 gallon as well, if you don't mind me asking what model skimmer are you using?
