So I have the IM 25 lagoon with a mighty jet 326 pump. I decided to update my pump to the AI Axis 40. When I went to start installing I noticed the hose fittings were to small for the AI 40. Was wondering if anyone could give me some insight and direction as to what I need? The mighty jet hose fitting was 12mm and the axis is 16mm I believe

Not exactly. I'm talking about the fitting for the nozzle on the outlet, on the axis it's 16mm and the mighty jet is 12mm

You'd have to get a short piece of 16mm (5/8") tubing to connect to the pump, then use a reducer like the one linked above, then a piece of your current 12mm (1/2") tubing. You might also be able to zip tie some softer 16mm silicone tubing onto the 12mm tank fitting, skipping the adapter, but the adapter is the proper way to do it.

I managed to figure it out. I ended up getting a 16mm tubing from the pump up to 1/2 T fitting that ended up fitting really snug. So managed to make it work.

What you stated is the problem with DC pumps and small tanks and pumps, the plumbing is too big for a small tank, when I look for a DC pump for my sub 25 gallon tanks I want a DC pump with the small barb included.
