I have 29 gallon with no sump and want to add an ato. The surface of my water has no dead zones at all and I'm certain it will trigger the float switch constantly. Would using a small overflow box to put the float switch in work?

An overflow box would work but you would need to drill another hole for water to feed back into the tank so it always matches the water level of the main tank.

Another idea would be to glue in some sort of "barrier" that would prevent surface turbulence just like rocks to protect a reef.
