Is Acropora A Good Idea?

I’ve been in the hobby for almost a year and have a bubble tip anemone a Gorgonian some Zoanthids and a mushroom. And I’m thinking about getting some Acropora, but I’m really nervous about making a big jump like that. Can you guys give me some information about them? Are Acros really as difficult as they’re made to seem?

Just start with a single cheap one and see how it goes. Never hurts to try!

I would totally do it! I got two acro frags for my tank when the tank wasn't really ready. I ended up losing one right away to RTN, but the other one has really flourished and always has its polyps extended. When you are just starting out with a few frags, don't worry about dosing and don't go crazy about testing and maintaining perfect levels. Focus on stable temperature and salinity and I think you'll be fine! I'd also try some montipora; I think that it is a little bit hardier and fast-growing overall.

+1 on those species -- especially the digi and stylo are great first stony corals.

I was looking at purple tip granulosa and shortcake variety I think they were. Do you think those would be okay?

Keep stable non zero nutrients, give them enough light/flow, and keep alk stable. Shouldn't be too bad! Start with a green slimer or some other easy acro! You'll be fine.

I'm with everyone above, just go for it.

I started with easy SPS, green slimer, poccilipora, stylophora, etc. Then when I was confident with my reefing, I bought a battle box from Adam over at @Battlecorals, and when we communicated I told him I was just getting into SPS and to send me some easier ones. He did not disappoint.

Light should be good. The next thing of concern is stable parameters. Do you have a history of your numbers staying stable and in proper ranges? If yes, you should be OK to try on a year old reef.
