The FMM is required for the Neptune Optical Sensors. Some users have gotten other bare wire optical sensors to work off of a break out box though.

How to you have the bare optical sensors connected? I think it needs power for the ir light. I have some but haven't spent time figuring out to connect.

There was a guy making a custom BOB & custom BOB kits. The eBay Chinese optical sensors just plugged into his board. The board has a power supply that powers the five sensors it handles. I have one. I love it and I want another. Unfortunately he's no longer interested in making them. Maybe Avast will jump in and out-engineer Neptune (again) with a BOB II.
